About Seed + Spoke Farms

Seed + Spoke Farms is the creative collaboration of Andrea Harsell and Erick Vines. Nestled in Missoula’s north hills, our small farm is a place where nature, beauty, and adventure come together.

SEED represents Andrea’s love for growing flowers, food, nature crafting, and community, rooted in the belief that when we nurture nature, it nurtures us back tenfold.

SPOKE speaks to Erick’s passion for movement, adventure, and connection to the land.

‘Ground Control 406’ is Erick’s hand-built single-track flow course that winds through the property. While not open to the public for recreation, it plays a key role in his competitive banked slalom snowboarding and off-season training. In the warmer months, the trail weaves through wildflowers and pine, and in winter, it transforms into a snowboard park. This unique trail system is an integral part of the farm’s landscape and character.

As Erick shaped the land with trails, I began to shape my connection with it in a different way, through agriculture.

How I Accidentally Became a Flower Farmer at 50

Hi, I’m Andrea, and I came by farming by accident. For most of the past 30+ years, I’ve been a touring musician, playing my brand of American Roots music wherever the road took me. In 2022, my truck engine died, and due to COVID supply chain issues, it was going to be a year before I could get back on the road. Unsure of my next move, Erick carved out a plot of land for me and offered me an opportunity to garden.

At first, I figured it would just be a way to pass the time, but that garden became something bigger. It gave me space to slow down, reflect, and find healing after losing my sister, Gwendolyn. I named it Butterfly Field Gardens in her honor, and as the flowers grew, so did something in me.

That first season gave me the skills to work with the land, a new rhythm to follow, and a deeper sense of self and healing. As I cared for the garden, it cared for me, strengthening my connection to nature in ways I never imagined. By August of 2022, we knew this was more than just a project, and Seed + Spoke Farms was born.

What started as a simple garden evolved into something greater, a farm rooted in flowers, community, and connection to the land.

What We Do

We specialize in cut flowers, offering a Flower CSA and a seasonal honor system roadside farm stand open from April to October. Our farm stand features fresh flower bouquets, farm-fresh eggs, honey, and other small-batch farm goods.

Our online farm store offers homemade salves, lip balms, soaps, candles, curated home goods, and Montana-inspired nature apparel and accessories, making it easy to bring a piece of our farm into your home.

In 2025, we will welcome visitors by appointment for special events like U-Pick Flowers and hands-on workshops. Our garden will also be available for private venue rentals, offering a one-of-a-kind setting for intimate gatherings and meaningful experiences in nature.

Planting Seeds for the Future – How We Have Grown

2022: Seed + Spoke Farms was officially named on August 1. I planted my first veggie and flower garden, doubled our flock, and started selling eggs. I also began experimenting with handcrafted farm goods like candles, soap, salves, and tinctures.

2023: We launched our e-commerce farm store and became a Made in Montana producer. Our roadside farm stand opened, and I expanded my growing space. I also completed CFAC’s Certified Farm Start-Up Program and ran my first Egg CSA.

2024: My first Flower CSA launched, and I grew more flowers than ever before. We redesigned the farm layout in anticipation of a future U-Pick flower operation. I continued making small-batch farm goods and deepened my exploration of botanical dyeing.

2025: In January, I was honored to be a panel speaker at the Western Montana Grazing and Agriculture Conference, sharing insights on agritourism. In March, I completed the Floret Workshop, a six-week intensive in flower farming.

With these experiences shaping the farm’s future, we’re stepping fully into this next chapter, deepening our commitment and connection to seasonal, local flowers and agritourism.

In just a few years, this farm has grown into something I never could have imagined—and it wouldn’t be possible without you. Thank you for being part of this journey. Let’s keep growing!
